In class this week we will be completing our end of term assessments so the usual timetable will not be followed. If you are shielding at home, please follow the reading activities on Oak National Academy for The Suitcase Kid, by Jacqueline Wilson (see link below).
In class this week we will continue to read the story of Varjak Paw and plan and write a newspaper report. If you are working from home, please keep up with the story by reading the chapters uploaded to this page.

LO: To plan a newspaper report
Reread p119 and think about ‘The Vanishings’. What might be happening to the cats?
A mystery of this kind might be presented in a newspaper. In class we will be looking at different newspaper headlines in our class copies of First News. Can you identify the language features of newspaper headlines? For example, catchy, alliteration, play on words. As a class we will explore what the newspaper headline might be for this point in the text. We will then compose our own headlines about 'The Vanishings' as a shared writing activity.
We will then consider what characters in the book might say about 'The Vanishings' for example, Varjak Paw, Holly or Sally Bones. We will then work in pairs, in role as an interviewer and eye-witness. What would each character think and how would the events make them feel? Write a list of questions that an interviewer would ask the characters and then try to answer in role. What would the characters say? These responses will be used as eye-witness statements in your newspaper reports this week.
