What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is extra funding given to schools to help support children who may need additional help or opportunities because of their family’s financial circumstances.

At Crockenhill Primary School, we use this funding to help children thrive, enjoy school and achieve their potential. This might include additional teaching or support, learning resources, access to clubs, activities and help with wider aspects of school life.

Who can receive Pupil Premium?

Your child may be eligible if your family receives certain benefits, including Universal Credit, or if your child has been in care or has previously been in care.

Some children whose parents or carers are serving in the Armed Forces may also be eligible for additional support.

An important change from September 2026

The rules around Free School Meals have changed.

From September 2026, children living in households receiving Universal Credit can receive Free School Meals, regardless of how much you earn.

This means that if you receive Universal Credit, it is worth checking whether your child is eligible and making an application.

What about children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2?

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 continue to receive a free school meal through the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme.

However, if your family receives Universal Credit, please still apply for Free School Meals if you think you may be eligible.

Even if your child is already receiving a free meal, registering them for Free School Meals can help our school receive additional Pupil Premium funding. This funding allows us to provide extra support and opportunities for children who need them.

How do I apply?

You can check whether your child is eligible and apply online through Kent County Council:

The process is straightforward, and Kent County Council will let you know whether your application is successful.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, please apply anyway.

Why is it important to apply?

Applying for Free School Meals does more than provide your child with a free meal.

It also helps us identify children who may benefit from additional support and means that our school may receive extra funding to help provide this.

We use Pupil Premium funding carefully to make a positive difference to children's education and wellbeing.
